Historically, the Colorado potato beetle has struggled to establish itself in many parts of California due to the state’s rigorous agricultural inspections and different climatic conditions. However, in smaller garden settings or specific inland valleys, they may occasionally appear. If you see small, soft-bodied orange larvae or striped beetles eating the leaves of your tomato plants, you are dealing with the beetle, not the Jerusalem cricket. Unless they are causing documented damage to your irrigation system or high-value seedlings, the best course of action is often to simply leave them alone.
