A reset button that refuses to stay depressed is a symptom of one of two things. Most commonly, the unit hasn't cooled down enough. The internal metal components remain expanded from heat, preventing the latch from catching. Wait 30 minutes and try again.
However, if the button pops out immediately every time you flip the wall switch—even after an hour of cooling—there is likely a direct electrical short inside the motor. In this scenario, the unit has reached the end of its functional life. Internal seals may have failed, allowing water to enter the motor housing, which creates a permanent short circuit. For safety reasons, these units are not user-serviceable and should be replaced.
Why Your Garburator Might Not Have a Reset Button
While almost all modern units manufactured in the last 20 years include this feature, you might encounter an older model or a specific budget brand that lacks an external button. If you use hot water, fats liquefy and then solidify further down the pipes, causing clogs that create back-pressure on the disposal motor.
Mind the Volume
Do not feed the disposal a large plate of scraps all at once. Feed items slowly, one handful at a time. Overloading the chamber forces the motor to work at its maximum torque, which generates heat and leads to tripping.
Know the "No-Go" List
